Although I had Grandee out of bed at 6.30am we didn't leave Broome until about 8.15, after saying farewell to the friends we had made during our wonderful two week stay at Tarangau Caravan Park.
We were heading for Eighty Mile Beach today for a two night stay. Originally we had planned an overnight stay at Sandfire Roadhouse, however we decided on Eighty Mile Beach as it had more to offer & was only another 50km past the Roadhouse.
Arriving at the turnoff to Eighty Mile Beach we found one caravanner opting out of the 9kms of unsealed road to the park. We found the road to be very corrugated & being new to towing a van over this type of surface I only did a maximum of 20km/h.
After arriving at the park & paying for one night's accommodation, we headed down the hill towards our site, only to be stopped by some of the residents, telling us that one of our our water tank was dragging on the ground. On inspection I found that the supporting straps had broken. Apparently the straps had weakened over time & due to the rough road had finally given way. We left quite a puddle of water on the road as the tanks were full. Thanks to help from other caravanners I was able to pull the water tank out from under the van & found that it was still intact. It should be ok when re-fitted. This job wouldl have to be done further down the track, as new straps were needed & they would have to be welded to one side. We found that we didn't need water in the tanks anyway, as there was water supplied to the sites, which we knew would be un-powered.
After finally setting up on our site, Grandee & I walked to the beach, where we found the tide was almost right out. We gathered shells from the millions that were there.
We headed back to the van. Along the way we sighted a van owned by a couple we had met at Victoria River, on our way from Katherine to Kununnura. The van was unusual in that the top section popped up over the bottom, completely different to the usual pop top. It was an old van which had had a lot of renovations over the years by it's owner, Lincoln.
At sunset we headed back to the beach, where I snapped some nice photos of the sun disappearing into the Indian Ocean. Actually I think this was the best sunset we had seen so far.
Back at our van we settled in for the night & found that amazingly we had TV reception. It was the best reception we had had on the whole trip.
