Thurs 5th August, 2010 - Day 69 - Exmouth

This morning we were up and about early as we were collected from the Exmouth Visitors Centre at 9.30am for our Ningaloo Ecology Cruise. We were taken by a small bus out to the Tantabiddi Boat Ramp, which is on the western side of Exmouth Gulf.

On the way we stopped at the SS Mildura Wreck, the ship hit a reef approx 80 years ago while carrying a load of cattle. All on board survived, only for the cattle to perish while on land because there was no fresh water for them to drink. From here it was on to our glass bottom boat, passing by the Ultra Low Frequency Navy Antenna Towers which are used to communicate with submarines and other shipping. The main tower is one of the tallest structures in the Southern Hemisphere,

Once on board the boat we enjoyed the fine coral gardens, plenty of bommies and a kaleidoscope of colourful fish. While out at the reef we stopped and quite a few of the tourists went snorkelling; it was a little too cool for Poppy & me to snorkel. We stayed on board and continued to enjoy the wonders passing below the boat.

On our way back to Exmouth we stopped at the Turtle Discovery Centre, for a short talk on the hatching life of a Turtle. Our next stop was at the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse where we saw whales in the distance beyond the reef. We also had 'birds-eye' views of the Ningaloo Reef.

Then it was back to the caravan for a late lunch. I had cooking to do, as out frozen meat had thawed in the freezer the day before; the fridge had accidently been turned off. Whilst I was doing this, Rex had to dismantle our jockey wheel & do some repairs.

Happy Hour was spent over with Betty & Les.

  1. Hi Mum & Dad,

I can't believe my husband used up all of the time on your phone tonight and I didn't even get to speak with you!!!

I assume that you arrived today at Coral Bay?

How is your trip going now that you are all by yourselves? I assume you are meeting some lovely people along the way.

Enjoy your time at Coral Bay and we will speak soon.

    Lots of love
