Mon 9th August, 2010 - Day 73 Carnarvon

My first job this morning was to got to Carnarvon Mechanical Services to try and organise re-fitting of our rear water tank, which fell off during our visit to Eighty Mile Beach. We were not very hopeful that they would be able to do the job on site at the park, however I was surprised when the chap said he would come over Tuesday mid morning. & do the job. It will be great to have the tank back on as we have been carting it in the back of the Patrol ever since the mishap.

Next on the list of things to do was a visit to the Information Centre, where we collected more brochures for our intended destinations; also to learn of the highlights of the Carnarvon area.
This over, we travelled out to the One Mile Jetty, where we boarded the small Coffee Pot train for our trip to the end of the Jetty. The train proceeded at a brisk walking pace over the rickety track. After about 15 minutes we arrived at our destination where we alighted for a short while. Some people were fishing, however no edible size fish were being caught. The Jetty is very old & is gradually being restored by local volunteers.

On returning to shore we had a look through the old Lighthouse residence & then proceeded to the Railway Museum & Shearers Hall Of Fame. It was especially interesting, looking at the many photographs of the old days of shearing. I'm sure Pa would have loved looking through this Museum.

By this time, I was feeling hungry so we returned to town, where we eventually found a Fish & Chips shop where we purchased the obvious. We ate our delicious meal near the waters edge.
Next was a quick trip to the airport where I snapped a shot of a Qantas Dash 8.
After this we travelled along the 'Food Trail'. We were astounded by the number & size of different crops that were thriving here, to name some ......... Bananas, Tomatoes, Grapes, Mangos, Oranges, Mandarins, Sweet Corn & many others.

Earlier I had noticed a large dish in the distance. We found from the brochures that this was the OTC Dish which had been used originally during the Moon landings. After arriving at the site, Grandee & I climbed the spiral steps to a platform where we could view the town & surrounds. The Dish is no longer in use.

Then it was home to our van for the rest of the afternoon.
