Wed 30th June, 2010 - Day 33

This is the day our trip should really step up. We left Victoria River Roadhouse at 8.30am leaving Mick & Maureen in our wake (first away for once) to finish their preparation. The road was quite rough, however our rig handled it well. Mick was having length way rolling problems with his rig & as a result had to slow down at times. Early in the trip I had to pull over to tighten screws in my mirror & fix my rattling toolbox. Mick & Maureen went sailing by & once again we were behind them. We passed the Mullers at Timber Creek, where they took on fuel.

After about two hours we stopped at a rest area & had a leisurely morning tea while waiting for the Mullers to catch up. When they arrived we went to their van, where we discussed getting rid of fruit & vegetables before our border crossing. We decided we would have lunch at the border & get rid of some of the evidence there.

The lunch rest area was right at the Quarantine station on the Western Australia border. No bins could be found to dump our leftover fruit & vegs so Mick & Maureen walked across to Quarantine, where they talked to a friendly officer who set them straight on procedures & showed them the dump bins.

We proceeded to the checkpoint where we were pleased to say everything went smoothly & they only checked our fridge. Grandee had dumped our leftovers in the provided bins prior to the inspection.

Due to the inspection I didn’t give a thought to photographs & as a result we left the border with no pictures, a terrible sin.

We arrived at the Big Four Lakeside Discovery Park at Kununurra at about 1.30 pm WA time. This is 2 hours behind the eastern states. This is to be our home base for seven nights. Our site was on a main thoroughfare to the amenities so our awning shade that Grandee & I had made came in very handy, giving us a little privacy.

After setting up & a cuppa Grandee & Maureen went shopping while Mick & I stayed behind to do whatever & to check where we were to have Happy Hour. We were to take our own chairs; nibbles were to be provided by the park.

By the time the girls arrived home Happy Hour was well in progress so we grabbed our glasses of wine & seating & made our way to the area near the hire canoes where it was all happening. Boules were being played so we joined in bowling or lobbing the steel balls towards the jack while sipping our wine during rests.

After Happy Hour we returned to our homes on wheels & prepared dinner which we ate under our awning, as the Mullers don’t have a ground sheet & there was not much grass on their site. Then it was shower time, & off to bed.
