Fri 2nd July, 2010 - Day 35

Today we set aside for exploring the tiny township of Wyndham which is approx 100klms from Kununurra. When we arrived at Wyndham it was of course morning tea time, so we located a small park and out came the thermos and cups for our cuppas. While we were enjoying our cuppas elderly people came along with their carers for their morning tea.

From here it was up to the Five Rivers Lookout/The Bastion, which is 350m above sea level. The panoramic views from the top of the Bastion are spectacular. A bronze plaque shows where the Forrest, Pentecost, Durack, King and Ord Rivers enter the Cambridge Gulf.

Wyndham is home to the Big Croc . A group of students in the 1980s were part of a Westrek/TAFE project to construct a reminder to all of our reptilian friends found throughout the East Kimberley. The Big Croc was designed by artist who used cutting edge technology in the 80s to plot some 2400 reference points of the Perth Zoo’s female croc of the time, Salty. She is made up of some 55klms of steel rod, 50kgs of welding rods, 10 rolls of bird mesh and 5 cubic meters of cement.

From here we headed back to Kununurra stopping in at The Grotto. An ideal swimming spot for all seasons lies at the base of 140 steps. More than 175m at its deepest, this natural amphitheatre is the perfect place to spend a few hours. This is a great swimming spot, however it is prudent to remember that fresh and saltwater crocodiles are found throughout waterways in the East Kimberley. I must mention that we did start descending the 140 steps, I might add that these steps consist of rocks winding their way to the bottom without a handrail, Maureen & I decided that we were not going any further, hence we all headed back to the top. We could hear others down there swimming. We did manage to take a few photos, however not of the complete swimming spot.

Then of course it was home to our house on wheels.
